Mad Red Books
Turning the Page in Las Vegas
A former journalist finds purpose, passion, and community inside the city’s coziest new bookstore.
It was never supposed to happen this way.
Joshua Dana stood in front of a small retail unit in Las Vegas, lease papers in hand, half convinced it was a joke. He’d just been turned down for a dream purchase—the acquisition of a well-loved independent bookstore—and now here he was, weeks later, somehow opening his own. The landlord had said yes. The doors were his. And in that surreal moment, standing in a quiet plaza with nothing but ambition and an idea, Mad Red Books began.
Inside, the bookstore feels like a lived-in poem. Light spills across rows of tall, honey-colored bookshelves, each one hand-built and stocked with over 10,000 titles. A plush armchair waits in the corner beneath a framed typewriter print. The faint smell of paper and time lingers in the air. Customers don’t just browse; they settle in. The space welcomes them.
Joshua, 40, greets regulars by name. His energy is calm and grounded, with a sharp eye for detail and a deep love for stories. Every inch of the space reflects that care. “We built this entire store ourselves,” he says. “It was just us, tools, and a deadline.” He smiles, remembering the long nights and dusty hands. “Honestly, it still feels like magic.”
A Life Rewritten
Joshua’s path to bookstore ownership wasn’t a straight one. Born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Las Vegas, he earned his degree in journalism and media studies from UNLV, driven by a passion for storytelling. But like many creatives, he found himself working jobs that paid the bills without feeding the soul.
“I didn’t want to be miserable anymore,” he says. “I turned 40 and realized I wanted something that mattered.”
Books had always been part of his identity. So when the opportunity came to work at a local bookstore, he took it, immersing himself in the trade with the long-term goal of owning it. For months, he prepared for that future. Then, days before Christmas, the deal fell through. The heartbreak was immediate.
“I cried for a couple of weeks,” Joshua admits. “Then I said, forget it. I’ll do it on my own.”
From that bold decision, Mad Red Books was born. The name came from a moment of humor, a wink to the fiery determination behind the dream. The “mad” wasn’t about anger. It was about doing something daring, unorthodox, full of heart.
Building with Books and Grit
By January, the business was official. By April, they had keys. The team—small but mighty—designed the space, built shelving from scratch, and developed an advanced point-of-sale system that could track thousands of books with precision. Joshua studied everything from ADA compliance to layout flow.
“It’s one thing to dream about owning a bookstore,” he says. “It’s another thing to actually build one.”
Challenges came fast. Budget constraints. Tight timelines. The sheer scale of organizing an entire store’s inventory. But Joshua leaned into it, treating every problem as a puzzle to solve.
“Everything was new. Everything was a first,” he recalls. “But we figured it out. We had to.”
Through it all, he never lost sight of the bookstore’s soul. It wouldn’t be flashy or sterile. It would be warm, imperfect in the best way, full of odd treasures and familiar comforts. The goal was simple: to make people feel like they belonged.
Not Just Books—A Bookstore with Heart
Today, Mad Red Books is more than a retail space. It is a living, breathing experience.
The shop offers new books at a permanent 15 percent discount, high-quality used books, rare first editions, and one of the best curated dollar book sections in town. Unlike some stores that hide their budget bins, Mad Red proudly features them, often stocked with unexpected gems.
“We want people to be able to afford books, no matter their budget,” Joshua says. “Everyone deserves access to literature.”
He’s also committed to supporting local authors, small publishers, and independent artists. The store regularly features Las Vegas writers and creatives, offering shelf space and hosting readings, signings, and pop-ups.
“If we don’t have what someone’s looking for, we’ll refer them to another local store. There’s no competition here. We’re all in this together.”
Every Book Has a Story
Walk into Mad Red Books on any given afternoon, and you’ll see it in action. A teenager paging through Sylvia Plath. A parent browsing for bedtime stories. A collector eyeing a signed Steinbeck.
“The best moments are when someone walks in and finds something they didn’t know they needed,” Joshua says. “That’s the magic. The book finds you.”
And while the books are the stars, the staff make the experience shine. Friendly, knowledgeable, and welcoming, they’re trained to create an environment of curiosity and comfort.
“We built our team with care,” he says. “We’re not here to upsell. We’re here to connect.”
Even the store’s online presence has soul. Their social media, managed by Zoe, a key team member, is quirky, heartfelt, and consistently brings new faces through the door. “Sixty to seventy percent of new customers find us on Instagram or TikTok,” Joshua explains. “Our reach is small but mighty.”
A Place That Feels Like Home
In just a few months, Mad Red Books has become a local favorite—not just for readers, but for anyone seeking a sense of belonging. Its impact is tangible. Parents bring their kids to pick out their first chapter books. Retirees linger with a cup of coffee, flipping through poetry. Writers find quiet corners to work.
Joshua often hears the same thing from customers: “I didn’t know how much I needed a place like this.”
Las Vegas, a city better known for neon than novels, has few independent bookstores left. Mad Red fills a gap—not just in the market, but in the heart of the community.
“I want this to be a gathering place,” Joshua says. “A space where people feel safe, seen, and inspired.”
Looking Ahead with Open Pages
As Mad Red Books settles into its rhythm, Joshua is already thinking about the future. He’s working toward certification from the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America, a prestigious honor that would make his shop one of the few rare book dealers in Nevada.
“My background is in rare books—Revolutionary War materials, old first editions. That’s a passion I want to grow into here.”
More events, more partnerships, and a deeper connection with the local creative scene are also on the horizon. But at the core, the mission remains the same: offer good books at good prices, with good people behind the counter.
“Books remind us we’re not alone,” Joshua says, quietly. “Even if someone lived hundreds of years ago, they felt what you feel. That’s powerful. That’s what this place is about.”
